10 Wizards win Virginia Invitational crown The Potomac Valley Wizards U 10 AAU boys basketball team won the Virginia Invitational Tournament last weekend at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Va. The Wizards earned a 29 18 victory against the Metro Sixers in the title game. Potomac Valley advanced to the championship by beating the Prince William Pacers, 36 19, in the semifinals. The Pacers are the reigning Virginia AAU Division I champions and hold the No. 1 seed for the upcoming AAU Nationals. The Wizards include Mark Anderson, Anthony Byrd, Reginald Corbin, T Covington, Drake Goddard, Santoni Graham, Juwan Malry, Tyson McDonald and Michael Morsell under coaches Reginald Corbin, Mike Morsell and Mark Anderson. Point guard Christopher Carter and center Antoine Banks Jr. each added four points. Saddiq Bey, Christian Jennings and Jayson Johnson contributed on defense and scored two points each. Darien Johnson also added solid defense. The Star Youth Athletics U 9 boys basketball team won three games at the Hampton Hoyas Tournament in Hampton, Va., and has lost its last three contests in the Bowie Magic U 10 league. Jamal Wright, Reginald Gardner Jr. and Michael White led the Stars in the Hampton tournament with 30, 23 and 21 points, respectively. Wright and White added 15 and 11 steals, respectively, and Wright added 11 rebounds. Aaron Thomas, Michael Jackson and Deville Phillips contributed 16, 15 and 12 rebounds, respectively, while Thomas scored 19 points and added nine steals. Adam Hamilton (nine points), David Dasher (seven points) and Erique Foggs (six points) also scored while Jiar Watson had five rebounds and seven steals. The Stars beat the Hampton Hoyas, 39 12, the Chesapeake Chargers (B), 40 9, and the Chesapeake Chargers (A), 40 29. On May 17, the Stars dropped a 35 17 decision to the Squash All Beefs in league play. Hamilton led the way with five points and seven rebounds. Wright added four points and four steals and Jackson had seven rebounds. Last week, the Stars dropped games to the Woodbridge Warriors (33 17) and the Potomac Valley Wizards (29 13). Anthony Cowan had 10 points and seven steals in the two games. Phillips led the way on the boards with 14 and added five blocked shots. Wright added six points and seven steals. Basketball tourneys, leagues seek teams The 12th Annual Maryland Invitational Basketball Tournament for boys teams ages 8 to 15 will be held June 9 11 at the newly remodeled Capital Sports Complex (formerly Run N Shoot Gym) in District Heights. The Elite Summer League is looking for girls high school junior varsity basketball teams. The league season is seven games, plus playoffs, with games on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through June 2. The Maryland Pacers U 17 boys basketball team seeks a dedicated team coach to start in June. The team practices in Temple Hills and participates in year round leagues and tournaments.
